Week 5: Smile
The things that I want to see Jude smile at
1.
When
he does something he didn’t think he could do.
2.
At
parents evening.
3.
The
Radio Times landing through his letterbox. (I would like both my boys to one
day have a subscription like me.)
4.
A
Labour election victory.
5.
Flying
into space AKA ‘Going on a swing.’
6.
When
he sees his mum and dad pick him up from school.
7.
When
the squiggles on the page crystalise into legible words and the epiphany of ‘I
can read’ falls across his mouth.
8.
When
he gets the keys to his first home.
9.
Finding
an estranged pound in his coat pocket.
10. Getting the role of Innkeeper#3 (Harriet says this is
a key role in a school nativity as not only do you get the line of “There’s no
room at the inn,” but you get the extra line of “But would you like to stay in
my stable.”)
11. Opening his exam envelope.
12. Having his hand taken and shaken by the driving
examiner.
13. Standing alongside his brother when it’s announced he’s
the winner of Edinburgh’s Best Comedy Show: the first time in the awards
history siblings have won in back-to-back years.
14. When he sees his partner walking up the aisle.
15. Watching Watford do a ‘professional job,’ keeping the
ball in the corner and securing a well-earned 1-0 win.
16. Having a cup of tea after a hard day’s work.
17. When he looks in the mirror – at any age.
18. Enjoying a film that is an old favourite of his parents.
19. Meeting Santa.
20. Coming down and seeing the presents under the tree.
21. His first pint in a pub.
22. When the dessert comes round in a restaurant.
23. Having the sand under his feet and a bucket in his
hand.
24. Picking up the phone and the person on the other end starting,
“We’re pleased to tell you, you…”
25. When his child smiles for the first time.
