Week 40: The Mooncrawl
Amassing close to
a 400 million views this week: a dance move that fans have dubbed ‘The
Mooncrawl.’ But for those of you not registered with the social media platform,
TikTok, you may be wondering what ‘The Mooncrawl’ is and what all the fuss is
about. So here are some answers to those questions you may have.
What is ‘The Mooncrawl’?
The mooncrawl is a
movement in which the baby glides backwards but their body action suggests
forward motion.
Who performed
‘The Mooncrawl’?
A baby called Jude
from Dunstable. At nine months he’s making his first foray into crawling;
however, his attempts have literally backfired. In attempting to propel himself
forward he has ended up going backwards.
Why has it
been called ‘The Mooncrawl’?
On TikTok titles
and hashtags are king. It appears that Jude’s father, Ryan, a graduate in GCSE
Business Studies is something of a marketing whizz. Aware of the ubiquity of
Michael Jackson’s moonwalk, he has repurposed the name for his baby son’s video.
There is self-awareness in the title: an arched eyebrow, suggesting that the
video in question will not be a sincere homage to the King of Pop, but a
comic attempt at the iconic move.
Why has it
gone viral?
After Jude’s dad
put the video online, the content was shared, quite possibly for its aah
factor. TikTok is synonymous with dance routines and make-up tutorials;
however, the other thing users like is babies. In December 2020 Daeox’s video
of a smiling baby has to-this-date hit 398.6 million views. Having a baby try
and fail at something has even more of an emotional pull. It also doesn’t hurt
that Amy Schumer and Emma Thompson have reenacted the video on the red carpet.
So what next?
Mooncrawl still
has a long way to go in usurping Zach King’s 2.2 billion Harry Potter themed
illusion video, but given its strong start you wouldn’t bet against ‘The
Mooncrawl’ one day being as historic as Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk.
